You Can't Dominate the Internet Marketing Roost If You Suck at Communicating

When you first start to get into IM and explore the waters a bit, it's easy to get overwhelmed. As you go through information in articles and online forums, you'll discover all kinds of lists featuring "how you too can be the next big thing!" Those lists probably all negate each other. One will state that you have to be patient if you wish to be the next big thing. Another will state that you have to be very smart about business if you wish to be the next big thing. Still, another will tell you that creativity is what will get you ahead. And, of course, there are going to be dozens of sales pages claiming they have the software or course to teach you how to be the next big thing.

Here's what's true: All of these things count (well, maybe not the software program, but the other things). Business smarts, creativity and patience are all very important to your success. Of course, if you can't clearly communicate with buyers and clients, none of the rest of it will actually matter.

Good communication involves more than just setting up a kick-ass sales page. A good copywriter can take care of that part of your project. Good communication is more than having a stunning site with an extensive FAQ area. You can have a pretty site with an extensive FAQ section by engaging the services of experienced web site designers and writers. Being good at communication takes learning to handle interpersonal communication as well as your copy and site. How do you get that?

1. Answer each and every email you receive within 24 hours of it hitting your inbox. We aren't joking with you. You don't have to write a novel in the body of each email. All you have to do is write a quick note that says something like "I received your e-mail and will be sending you a full response shortly." It is a good idea to include a reference to something they've written when you do this. This is what will tell the person that you actually care about them and are not an autoresponder.

2. Answer your phone. Don't screen calls. You should always try to answer the phone by the third ring. This is true even if you REALLY don't want to talk to the person on the other end of the line. There is, however, an exemption to this rule. You don't have to be attached to the phone all day and all night. Instead, just set definite "business" hours during which you plan on being available to talk on the phone. Put these hours up on your website and state them in your voice mail message. And, obviously, every person who leaves a message deserves a call back.

3. Ensure that the individuals you send messages and emails to really have received those emails. This indicates to them that you value your communication with them. You'll endear yourself more with the people you work with and who buy your products if you ask them if they have any questions and follow up to see to it that they understood the points you were trying to make.
